BRIEF SUMMARY OF OVERALL PROJECT WITH THE MAIN OBJECTIVES
Jordan is rich in flora with over 2500 species including 363 endemic species of vascular plants. Jor-dan is part of the Fertile Crescent and is a hotspot for crop, crop wild relative and medicinal plant diversity of global importance. About 35% of Jordanian flora can be found at the Royal Botanic Garden of Jordan (RBG), which is located in protected hillside at Tell Ar- Rumman. The RBG mis-sion is to conserve regional biodiversity on the habitat level. Through the BOT-ERA project, RBG aims to become more closely integrated with the European Research Area (ERA) through capacity building and strategic collaboration with three excellent European research and innovation organi-sations - Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, School of Biosciences, University of Birmingham and Inno-veo Consulting S.àr.l - in three key botanical research topics: A) Plants and Seed Conservation, B) Genetic Resource Diversity and Biotechnology, and C) Utilisation and Access Benefit Sharing.
The BOT-ERA lasts for 3 years and it implemented by a dedicated team of experienced RBG re-searchers. BOT-ERA was overseen by a steering committee involving the consortium partners plus members of the Ministry of Environment, National Centre for Agricultural Research and Extension (NCARE) in Jordan and International Centre for Agricultural Research in Dry Areas (ICARDA). BOT-ERA contributed effectively in improving specific research capabilities of the RBG as well as Jordanian researchers dealing with plant conservation. The BOT-ERA project supported the RBG’s and Jordan’s participation in EU R&D programmes and integration in ERA.
THE PROBLEM AREA ADDRESSED
The BOT-ERA Evaluation Report was submitted six months late due to staff changes within RBG and the organisation of the international conference. Cosequently, the BOT-ERA Strategy Report for RBG delayed due to the issues with the preceding evaluation report.
The final Wild Socioeconomic Plant Conservation Strategy for Jordan was submitted 10 months late in order to ensure all relevant stakeholder feedback was captured.
All the BOT-ERA targets were met or exceeded with the exception of new FP7 proposals where none were submitted involving the consortium partners. Although Innoveo partner initiated efforts to prepare a Marie Curie RISE proposal in mid-2014, but due to the uncertainty caused by Kew’s organisational restructuring in late 2014, the proposal preparations needed to be postponed.
DESCRIPTION OF THE ACHIEVEMENTS
The following have been achieved:
• Data about 2,600 plant species were compiled and published in the “Checklist of the Vascular Plants of Jordan”.
• Twenty-five Jordanian researchers were trained in multilateral environmental agreements, and how Botanical Gardens contribute to agreements, including ground work, data collection, and their support to international sectaries action bodies.
• RBG staff received training on conservation genetics techniques for the conservation of plant taxa at Kew’s Jodrell Laboratory. The training covered sample collection, establishing a la-boratory, molecular techniques, and data analysis through a combination of theoretical and practical methods.
• Jordanian researchers have been trained on topics relevant to Horizon 2020 opportunities for Jordanian organisations involved in botanical or agricultural research.’
• Jordanian researchers have been trained on techniques for the conservation of plant species using in vitro plant cryopreservation at the Hamdi Mango Center for Scientific Research (HMCSR), University of Jordan.
• A draft and agreed Wild Socioeconomic Plant Conservation Strategy for Jordan produced.
• An International Conference on the Conservation and Use of Socio-Economically Important, Wild Plants in the Fertile Crescent 8-9 April 2014, Amman, Jordan.
